Students | Alumni | Employers
Career Services can be defined by its mission which is to “seek to help students and alumni identify, prepare for and enter into God’s place of service through career advising, and job searching assistance.”
As soon as they enter the university, students can receive career-related assistance from the many resources available through the Career Services office.
- The office is located in the Student Center, a central campus location convenient for students.
- Online resources include many helpful links to job boards, tips and hints, how-to’s and other instructional materials on job-searching, resume writing and more.
Career Advising
Students who are not sure of what major or minor to study can take an interest inventory to help identify their primary interests and receive career counseling to help point them in the right direction. Students who identify a program of study that relates to their primary interests are typically more successful in reaching their academic goals.
“Career Services provided me with tools to help determine my areas of interest as I was deciding on a minor. They also gave me practical advice and were able to answer my specific questions.”

Career Guide
Each fall, students are given a new edition of the Career Guide, a booklet with important resources to help students succeed in college and prepare for entry level employment opportunities upon graduation.
Topics include how to choose a major, a 4-year career action plan, tips on networking, resume writing and job interviewing. It concludes with a helpful section about what to expect during the first year at a new job.
By providing Career Services, BJU complements the quality of its Christian liberal arts education with the tools and skills necessary to enter a career.
CareerCentral
Career Services connects students, grads and employers through CareerCentral, BJU’s online job board that provides opportunities for student and alumni job seekers to network with interested employers.
“I have benefited (from CareerCentral) by being able to correspond with employers all over the world. I have been able to catch a glimpse of many different ministries through my correspondence with them.”

Events for Students
In addition to the office and online resources, Career Services organizes several on-campus recruiting events each year including the BJU Job Fair, the Christian School Recruitment Conference and the Career Fair, giving students opportunities to network with employers who are invited to participate.
Dr. Steve Buckley, manager of Career Services, connects students with potential employers and organizes events including job fairs and resume and interview workshops.
“Every year we have a number of returning recruiters, and these recruiters are focused on networking with BJU students,” said Dr. Buckley. “This is an efficient way for students to identify opportunities and secure employment prior to graduation.”
After employers consider an individual’s college major, GPA, and experience, they look for the following qualities:
- Verbal communication skills
- Written communication skills
- Strong work ethic
- Teamwork skills
- Analytical skills
- Initiative
- Problem-solving skills
- Technical skills
- Interpersonal skills
- Flexibility
- Computer skills
- Detail-oriented focus
Since BJU’s liberal arts education encourages the development of these important skills and character qualities, employers routinely network with students through Student Center interview offices, major on-campus recruiting events and BJU’s CareerCentral online job board.
