Apparel, Textiles, and Design

The Apparel, Textiles, and Design major provides instruction in sewing, apparel construction, fabrics and textiles, sewing for interior design, costume, fiber arts, and related fields. Theoretical presentations are complemented by extensive laboratory experiences and address the latest technological developments. The program focuses on preparation for the home as well as other ministry and career opportunities.

Key Courses

Apparel Construction I This class provides the opportunity to learn or perfect basic apparel construction skills. Instruction will be given in selecting and using commercial patterns, basic pattern alterations, and specific construction and design techniques.

Apparel Construction II This class builds on Apparel Construction I skills and provides additional, advanced construction opportunities and detail work.

Advanced Construction Techniques Here you will receive experience sewing specialty fabrics, using various machine features, and applying decorative designs.

Sewing for the Home This class introduces you to the world of sewing for the home and interior design. You will receive lecture material and lab experiences in table linens, window treatments, pillows, and bed linens. The Sewing for Interior Design II class will provide further, more specialized experiences.

Textiles for the Consumer In this class you will study fibers, weaves, finishes, and manufacturing processes in the textile industry.

Apparel, Textiles, & Design Internship You will take this course your senior year. You will gain practical on-the-job type experience in a clothing and textiles area of your choosing.

Flat Pattern Design Students design and construct original patterns to achieve proper fit and to include various style details.

History of Apparel Students study the dress from ancient Egypt to modern times as influenced by changes in history.
