Family and Consumer Sciences
Family and Consumer Sciences is the practical application of art and science in the home. This major offers a wide variety of courses and career options. Course offerings in this major include the study of foods and nutrition; apparel, textiles and design; housing, home furnishings and interior design; child care and development; and personal, consumer, and home management. You will receive a broad base of FCS knowledge and an option to specialize in one specific area within FCS. Along with your academic specialization, you will receive well-rounded Biblical instruction for establishing a Christian home and family. You will be well equipped for many career opportunities, including the all-important roles of wife and mother.
The profession of home economics in the United States has changed its name. The new professional name is Family and Consumer Sciences. Our division at BJU is now listed as the Division of Family and Consumer Sciences in the University catalog.

Key Courses
Home Furnishings This class will introduce you to the basic needs of the home, including the application of elements of art and principles of design, furniture styling and selection, and principles of furniture arrangement.
Personal and Home Management In this course, you will learn the principles of personal management, including the development of professionalism, grooming, wardrobe selection, management principles for the individual and family, values, goals, and standards as they affect time, energy, money and other resources.
Child Care and Development Here you will study the principles of development and growth of children from conception to six years of age. You will apply these principles as you receive weekly laboratory experience in the University's Child Development Center.
Introduction to Apparel This class provides the opportunity to learn or perfect sewing and clothing construction skills. Instruction will be given in selecting and using commercial patterns, basic pattern alterations, and specific construction techniques.
Food Preparation You will learn how to properly select, store, and prepare a variety of food products for the home. A weekly lab will reinforce class lecture material in a practical way.
FCS Internship You will receive practical experience, on or off campus, in clothing and textiles, foods and nutrition, child development, or a specific home management related subject. The internship is designed to provide maximum exposure in your FCS field of interest, which you will find valuable in making career choices.
