Interior Design
The Interior Design major is an exciting and multi-faceted program concentrating in both residential and commercial interior design and art, as well as on small business strategies. Special emphasis is placed on current social trends in the field of design (Americans with Disabilities Act, green and sustainable design, technological advances, etc.). Coupled with the liberal arts training and extra-curricular fine arts exposure, you will gain a varied background from which to launch a career in mainstream interior design or one of the field’s many support areas (floral design, home sewing workroom, material sales representative, decorative paint techniques specialist, etc.).

Key Courses
Introduction to Interior Design This class will introduce you to the professional and personal qualifications of the interior designer, as well as the communication methods used to produce presentation boards for clients with emphasis on space planning, elements and principles of art, and lighting.
History of Interior Design This class deals with the development of architectural styles, the development of furniture styles from antiquity to the present, and an overview of modern furniture-making techniques.
Basic Residential Drafting In this class, you will learn manual drafting of a house plan, complete with dimensions, electrical and mechanical markings, furniture plan, and elevation drawings. Included, as well, is an overview of house financing, and a study of materials, laws, and the sociology of housing.
Interior Design Professional Practice As the last formal design class before you do your senior internship, this class includes the experience of working with a real client on that client's home. It also covers all of the business side of operating an interior design business.
Design Applications You will receive studio training in two-dimensional design, including application of the elements of art and principles of design to varied course projects. The course also includes training in perspective drawings of interiors and scale model construction.
Sewing for Interior Decorating I and II Here you will learn how to design and construct custom window treatments, bed coverings, table linens, pillows, cushions and other custom made accessories for the home. You will work with actual clients for some class projects.
