Letter to Prospective IT Majors

Computer Science | Department | Events | Faculty | Prospective Students

As the chairman of the Department of Computer Science, I am pleased that you are considering a major in Information Technology. If you have read the material on this website, you know that the IT major prepares students to support the Information Technology needs of an organization. In order to progress successfully through this major a student must be proficient in the basic Microsoft Office software applications: Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.

When you begin your registration process, you will be asked to take a placement test that will give us an indication of your knowledge and experience with respect to the aforementioned software. We will place you in a class, Computer Applications I, II, or III, that will take you from where you are and build the necessary foundation for your future work.

Computer Applications III is the first course that counts toward the 36 hours in the major. If it is necessary for you to take one or both of the prerequisite courses, they will count toward general electives.

You may have taken a high school course that used these applications or you may have learned them on your own. I suggest that you spend some time this summer familiarizing yourself with the Microsoft Office products mentioned above. Your local public library probably has some books you can check out that will help you. We recommend Exploring Office XP Volume 1 and Volume 2. If you will work through the exercises in those books, you should be prepared to take the test.

Information Technology is a challenging and rewarding field of study. I hope you are excited about joining our department; we are looking forward to meeting you! If you have any questions, I invite you to e-mail Mr. David Hanson (dhanson@bju.edu), who is the faculty advisor for freshman Information Technology students.
