Mathematics

In our mathematics program, we place emphasis on the understanding of mathematical concepts. As a result, you will learn both the theory and the application of mathematics. Since we go far beyond drill and routine use of mathematics, our graduates perform extremely well in graduate schools and in industry.

Key Courses

Transcendental Functions In this course you will study transcendental functions, including trigonometric functions, logarithmic and exponential functions, and more.

Calculus Calculus is a 4-semester sequence of courses and is the heart of the math program. You will study tools that enable one to approximate functions with polynomials, calculate volumes and area of irregular shaped objects, and find maxima and minima of functions. These tools are essential for any successful scientist or engineer.

Elementary Linear Algebra This class will give you a study of vectors, vector functions, linear functions, solutions of linear systems of equations, matrices, determinants, and eigenvalues.

Abstract Algebra In this elective course you will study set theory, topics from number theory, and the theory of algebraic structures including mappings, group theory, rings, integral domains, and fields.

Career Opportunities

As a Mathematics major, you will have the opportunity to go to graduate school before entering upon your career. Our graduates not only are readily accepted in most graduate schools, but also are eagerly recruited. Most graduates place at the top of their respective graduate classes.

The following are some opportunities available to you:

  • Life insurance—actuarial science
  • Operations research—a combination of mathematics, computer science, and business management
  • Cryptography—the encoding and decoding of messages
  • College teaching—several of our graduates have Ph.D. degrees and are teaching at major universities
  • Statistician—used in quantitative management
  • Government and Industry
  • Engineering
  • Computer science
  • Law
