Bio 210: Foundations of Biological Investigation 3 credits

A discussion of the scientific method and its use within the Biblical worldview. The formulation of scientifically testable hypotheses from initial observations as well as the design and execution of appropriate experiments will be central topics. Since accurate communication within the scientific enterprise is essential, writing reports describing one's findings in journal article format, and critically evaluating the research studies of others published in the biological literature will be covered. Required of all students majoring in Biology.

Bio 300: Evolution & Origins 3 credits

Philosophical and biological evaluation of the theories of evolution, the intelligent design movement and special creation. Topics include natural selection, genetic drift, adaptation, genetic variation, speciation, macroevolution, geological time scale, historical Adam, and the beginning of life. Theological implications of each theory are discussed and a creationary model of the diversity of life is explored.

Gametogenesis, fertilization and embryological development of major model organisms (insects, amphibians, fish, birds, mammals) as well as humans. Major topics include developmental genetics, cell-cell communication, patterning, morphogenesis, organogenesis, nervous system development, growth, regeneration, and environmental developmental biology. Bioethical issues in developmental biology are explored.

Taxonomic techniques and philosophical assumptions of various natural and artificial approaches to classification including baraminology. Bio 322: General Microbiology 4 credits

The biology of prokaryotes and viruses with emphasis on their structure and physiology. This course is based substantially on the key concepts and associated learning outcomes recommended by the American Society for Microbiology. Topics include diversity, environmental importance and interaction with humans, human attempts to control and harness them. Consideration is given to basic immunology and principles of infectious disease. Laboratory work focuses on the metabolism, identification, and physiology of bacteria. Lecture and lab.

Bio 330: Biostatistics 3 credits

An introductory biostatistics course covering the basics of statistics as applied to biological and medical problems. The student is introduced to how to determine what test is appropriate to apply to a given problem as well as how to interpret the outputs of a standard statistical software package (JMP-, SAS Institute). Specific topics include the basics of sampling, descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, inferential statistics, and hypothesis testing. In addition, statistical methods on frequency data (Chi square, odds ratios and relative risk), on differences between two samples (t test) and between more than two samples (ANOVA), tests of relationship (correlation and regression, linear, logistic, and nonlinear), the Generalized Linear Model, and survival analysis are covered.

Develops and applies computational and statistical methods to solve biological problems. Topics include sequence analysis and algorithms, gene annotation, protein sequence analysis, proteomics, gene expression analysis, comparative genomics, genetic networks and pathways, and systems biology. Students will learn how to use available software tools for analysis. Basic programming concepts will be introduced.

Bio 416: Molecular Design & Intellectual Property 3 credits

An overview of the principles of molecular diagnostics and how to apply molecular biology to test design. Students will learn fundamentals of primer and probe design, the basics of concept development testing, and introduction to intellectual property laws and submissions. Students will design a molecular diagnostics test, test the design, present the design, and write a patent application. Recommended corequisite: Bio 413 or Bio 414.

Bio 417: Regulatory Affairs & Biotech Manufacturing 3 credits

An introduction to laws and regulations that apply to the development, testing, and production of drugs, medical devices, and biotechnology-derived products. This course will cover quality systems management and good manufacturing practices. Students will prepare a medical device technical file as part of a major grade for the class.

This course introduces students to differences in worldview as it relates to biological principles, techniques, and practices. Students will prepare biological research or a biology topic for presentation and feedback at an international forum and share the skills and thinking processes that they have learned with others in their field. Students will be emersed in a culture where they can explore the environment, ecosystems, flora, fauna, cells, and genetics. The course will include several classroom sessions to prepare students for a trip abroad and a final reflective essay.
