Correspondence Division Overview
Overview | Courses | FAQs
| Application
The Correspondence Division is designed specifically for students who desire a flexible schedule, who cannot attend classes on campus, or who desire to further their education through independent study. As much as is possible, the content of a correspondence course is identical to the same course offered in residence; only the method of study is different. Though we do not offer a complete degree by correspondence, our courses can be transferred to degree programs. Our correspondence courses, recognized across the United States, offer flexibility without jeopardizing academic credibility.
The courses are primarily designed to be taken for college credit. However, individuals who are interested in learning simply for the sake of learning are welcome to enroll. Such students may audit these courses and gain the information offered without taking examinations or earning college credit.
Undergraduate and graduate correspondence courses are all taught from a Christian worldview. Students receive the same lectures and do the same assignments as our University resident students and are expected to meet the same high academic standards.
Online Courses
Several of our correspondence courses are being offered as online courses this summer.
Enrolling in a Correspondence Course
You can sign up for a correspondence course at any time of the year and work on your
course at your own pace, in time to meet your own academic deadlines. To sign up for a
correspondence course, fill out the application
and mail it with payment to
the Office of Extended Education, Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC 29614. If you pay by credit
card, you may fax the application to us at 864.271.8187. Because we must have your
signature, we cannot accept emailed applications.
Undergraduate Credit
Any student who has completed a high school diploma is eligible to apply for BJU's undergraduate correspondence courses. In addition, high school seniors who are planning to attend BJU and are within twelve months of graduation may be eligible to take a limited number of undergraduate correspondence courses through our Limited Early Admissions Program (LEAP).
Courses numbered from 100 to 199 are given primarily for freshmen. Courses numbered 200-299 are given primarily for sophomores. Courses numbered 300-399 are given primarily for juniors. Courses numbered 400-499 are given primarily for seniors. Courses numbered 500-599 are advanced courses primarily for juniors, seniors, and graduate students.
Students may take up to 30 hours of courses through the Office of Extended Education and transfer them to an undergraduate degree program at BJU. Non-BJU students may take as many undergraduate correspondence courses as their college permits. Acceptance into an undergraduate correspondence course does not imply acceptance into an undergraduate degree program at BJU.
Graduate Credit
There are a number of courses available for graduate credit through the Office of Extended Education. These courses primarily utilize video media and require that the student have access to a VHS or DVD player.
Students taking 500-level courses for graduate credit will have an additional project or paper as part of their course requirements. Courses numbered from 600 to 699 are primarily for graduate students pursuing master's degrees. Courses numbered from 700 to 899 are primarily for advanced graduate and doctoral students.
Any student who applies for graduate credit and has received his bachelor's degree from an institution other than BJU must submit an official transcript from that institution to BJU's Records Office. No student will be approved for graduate credit who does not meet the GPA requirements for graduate study at BJU. Acceptance as a non-degree graduate student taking Extended Education courses does not necessarily imply admission to BJU or to a particular degree program.
Any student approved to take Extended Education courses for graduate credit may apply up to eighteen hours of credit toward a graduate degree program at BJU. The actual number of BJU Extended Education courses that may be applied depends upon both the degree program and the number of nonresident courses to be transferred. Upon application for a graduate degree program, students must submit official transcripts from every school they have attended. The University's Scholarship Committee reviews all applicants for official approval into a specific graduate degree program.
