About Bob

As a member of the BJU faculty, Dr. Robert D. Bell has been teaching graduate seminary courses since 1968. Before teaching Hebrew and advanced Old Testament courses, he worked as an instructor (GA) in freshman English for four years. After completing his PhD in Old Testament interpretation in 1970, he did post-graduate studies at Regent College in Vancouver, BC, Canada, studying under and actively interacting with F. F. Bruce, K. A. Kitchen, and William J. Martin.

Dr. Bell has taught more than 30 different graduate seminary courses. Over the years he has revised and developed the Old Testament curriculum, especially in the areas of Hebrew instruction and Old Testament theology. He is the co-author with Michael P. V. Barrett of the Hebrew Handbook (BJUP, 2007), including the presentation of a unique analysis of the Hebrew verb system (transformational grammar). He has studied extensively in the field of linguistics and taught summer courses in semantics and translation. He has directed numerous doctoral dissertations committees, focusing on book theologies of the Old Testament. He is the author of 60 journal articles for Biblical Viewpoint, including 20 book theology articles. In 2010 Bob Jones University Press (BJUP) published his 500-page book The Theological Messages of the Old Testament Books. Since 1997 he has read six papers at the Bible Faculty Leadership Summit.

Dr. Bell has been an adult training union and Sunday school teacher for over 40 years at Hampton Park Baptist Church in Greenville, SC. He has taught modular courses on the mission field in South Africa, Ukraine, India, and most recently Haiti. He and his wife Kathy, a professional calligrapher, have two adult sons and five grandchildren. He enjoys collecting stamps and is a member of the American Philatelic Society.
