Besides co-authoring two high school French textbooks, French I for Christian Schools and French II for Christian Schools, Dr. Byers has published several review articles in The French Review, the journal of the American Association of Teachers of French. A member of AATF, he serves as the secretary/treasurer of its South Carolina chapter. At one of their recent workshops, he presented a session on the use of the media in French classes. He is also a member of the board of directors of the South Carolina Foreign Language Teachers Association. At BJU, he developed the beginning and intermediate French course syllabi, and recently submitted a proposal for a new French major program at the University.
As a Christian foreign language teacher, he sees his work as contributing to the redemptive influence of the Christian in a fallen world. His students gain the ability to communicate the gospel of Christ to a person of another language and culture. This view of ministry is what led Dr. Byers to Bob Jones University in the first place, and it is what has motivated him to participate in mission teams to Quebec and Haiti over the years. He is also active in his local church where he serves as an elder, Sunday school teacher, and VBS leader. In his free-time, he enjoys spending time with his family, especially his four (soon to be five) grandchildren, all of whom live in Greenville.
