The English education program at BJU will prepare you to be an effective, innovative and Christ-centered educator, whether you teach in a public, private or Christian school.
Our program is approved by the South Carolina Department of Education and leads to initial South Carolina state licensure (certification to teach grades 9-12 in a public school setting). Graduates from BJU’s English education program have been accepted into leading graduate schools and are teaching both nationally and internationally.
BJU’s English education program ensures that you’ll gain proficiency in speech, writing, grammar, literature, technology and pedagogy. You’ll develop a thorough understanding of English language arts in your content area classes—including Structure of Modern English, Multiethnic Literature, Expository Writing, and Teaching Speech & Drama.
Through your education classes—Theories of Teaching & Learning, Teaching Reading & Writing in the Content Areas, Teaching English: Writing, and Teaching English: Literature—you’ll develop your own working educational philosophy. In one class, you will create a Christian worldview statement specifically concerning the teaching of literature.
Your methods and technology classes will provide experience with diverse teaching strategies and up-to-date educational technology. Some of your projects will include creating a graphic novel for teens and developing a three-week teaching unit on a major literary novel.
Most importantly, you’ll gain real-life experience in the classroom through varied practicum experiences in your sophomore and junior years. Finally, during your senior year you’ll complete your degree with a semester-long clinical practice, enabling you to work in a local high school classroom setting with an experienced English teacher.
The BJU Core, a unique combination of Bible and liberal arts courses taken by every BJU student, will further enhance your education. Bible courses, as well as daily chapel services and godly professors, will nurture your growth in Christlikeness. Liberal arts courses will broaden your horizons and equip you with skills essential both for teaching and for all of life—skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving, effective communication, ethical decision making, adaptability and much more. The BJU Core perfectly complements the English education program’s goal of preparing “Christian teachers to be models of learning and life.”
You may choose to supplement your program with a minor closely related to English education, such as creative writing or teaching English as a second language. Or you may choose to fit in a variety of extra classes according to your personal interests.

My education at Bob Jones University equipped me in myriad ways to follow God’s command to teach and make disciples.
Looking back on my time at the University, I can see how the Lord was preparing me for the future. The academic side certainly helped to prepare me with content, methods, and strategies for teaching. One aspect that was especially practical was the practicum and student teaching experience. Being in the classroom, watching experienced teachers, and getting as close to the "real deal" of teaching as possible before actually holding a teaching position helped me begin to apply what I had been learning in my methods classes and gave me a small taste of what teaching is like. I also learned life skills that have helped me beyond the classroom: working with and learning from other people, managing my time effectively, and studying efficiently.
Probably the most significant influence from my time at BJU was the faculty. Their dedication to teaching made an impression on me while I was a student, and now as a teacher, it amazes me to think of all the work they did without complaining or hoarding their precious time! They were always available to discuss a project or assignment or even give advice, despite their demanding schedules. Observing their teaching styles and methods was important, but seeing how they care about their students and seek to minister to them has made an even greater impact on my life. Teachers have the opportunity to change the world, one life at a time, and I witnessed that firsthand at BJU.

Through my education at BJU, God was able to teach me that I need Him in every task, big or small, and that my dependence on Him can accomplish things I could never hope to do on my own.
My freshman year of college gave me just a taste of what the English education program at BJU would offer. My sophomore year exposed me to more pedagogy classes within the program, while it simultaneously grounded me in foundational literature. By my junior year I was teaching and observing in a public school classroom, shadowing a veteran teacher as she made American literature come alive to her students. My senior year culminated in a semester of student teaching, which God used in a multitude of ways to prepare me for my current job.
My preparation to teach did not come from one single class or one semester or even one year of school. My preparation depended on the program as a whole, starting with BJA observations my freshman year and progressing through practical class projects, papers, class leadership opportunities, and a multitude of teaching experiences, closing with my student teaching my senior year.

I truly believe that the education and experiences I receive here, from the many practical methods courses to the opportunities to tutor students, are equipping me for my future ministry.
Initially, I came to BJU with the intentions of majoring in English. However, my advisor quickly recognized my passion for teens and suggested I look into the English education program. Immediately after the English education advisor described the major, I knew the Lord was redirecting my path. Consequently, right before classes started I switched my major from English to English education.
I am so thankful that the Lord used my advisors to change my plan to fit His perfect will. And God continues to guide my life through the influence of classes and passionate teachers. For instance, in Teaching Reading in the Content Areas, I learned about the struggles of impoverished students. Previously, I had felt the Lord leading me to teach at an inner-city public school; and through that class, God confirmed His calling.

BJU offers students a variety of ways to network with employers and organizations. A multitude of job opportunities are posted each year on CareerCentral, our online placement service. In addition, over 60 businesses and 150 Christian schools/mission boards/Christian organizations come on campus to recruit students through on-campus interviews and job/ministry fairs. The Career Services office also helps students by holding seminars on resume preparation and interview techniques.
Both content knowledge and classroom experience are essential for confident teaching. Your teaching preparation moves gently from classroom observations to after-school tutoring to practicum two mornings a week. Meanwhile, your methods classes will give you plenty of practice in lesson planning.
By the time you begin your clinical practice your senior year, you will be well prepared with various unit plans and lesson plans—as well as at least 100 hours of classroom experience. Clinical practice is the capstone experience of your preparation. You’ll have the opportunity to spend a semester in a local public high school, working with an English mentor-teacher there. You will also receive weekly feedback from both your mentor-teacher and BJU professor.
Washington Center Challenge Day
Every fall Bob Jones University hosts the Special Olympics Developmental Games for students from Washington Center, a school for children and young people with severe mental disabilities. Education majors from BJU assist the student athletes in activities and games as the athletes’ families and teachers cheer them on.
University Educators Association
The University Educators Association provides programs and activities that complement BJU’s teacher preparation program, such as:
- Professional development. You have the opportunity to hear speakers who are experts and practitioners in their particular field.
- Opportunities to attend Christian School Teachers' Conventions and other professional meetings.
- Provision of professional materials.
- Social interaction with other future teachers.
- Opportunities to serve and to enlist others to participate in BJES Field Day activities and other educational functions.
Our English and education faculty average more than 25 years of experience in their fields, including years of researching literary masterpieces, creating and using visual technology, performing drama, and teaching high school. They inspire love of writing and literature and enjoy helping you grow in your teaching ability and in your love for your practicum and clinical practice students. Our faculty are good examples of godly Christians and of teaching professionals.
