Administrative Management

The Administrative Management major prepares graduates to communicate effectively, to think logically and creatively, and to relate well to other people. Students learn to manage processes related to technology, marketing, research, planning, business development, decision-making, reporting, purchasing, workspace design, budgets, travel public relations, records management and human resources. A broad range of courses deal with business technology including numerous hands-on courses using such programs as Access, Excel, Word, Dreamweaver, QuickBooks, PhotoShop, and InDesign. Two hardware-related courses along with a teaching technology course are included as well. The major prepares graduates for a wide range of career paths many of which include management positions.

Key Courses

Desktop Publishing Study of practical design guidelines. Includes extensive hands-on experience with layout and photo editing software. (Semester project: full-color business promotional brochure/booklet/pamphlet)

Intro to Records and Database Management Includes study of emerging records management concerns and solutions along with comprehensive hands-on database design for small businesses. (Semester project: Given a business scenario, students are required to design a database to meet the business’s needs including creating multiple database queries, designing forms for easy data entry, formulating reports to display appropriate query data, and then packaging the database in a user-friendly manner.)

Administrative Technology I & II Study of emerging business processes and technology and relating that study to budgeting, analyzing, recommending and installing hardware and software in the small business. (Semester project: Students analyze hardware, software and networking needs for a simulated small business. Based on research and on a limited budget, they recommend particular purchases to meet the specific needs of that small business.)

Human Resources Study of the major functions within human resources. These functions include training, compensation and benefits, legal compliance, recruiting and hiring, management and employee relations, and research. (Due to the introductory nature of this course, large projects are not assigned. However, students participate in several team projects throughout the semester as well as article reviews.)

Administrative Management Study relating to communication and motivation, improvement of productivity and quality of work, ethical behavior, teamwork, problem solving and leadership. (Semester project: Team written and oral presentation of an ergonomic design for a five-person office including suggested purchases to outfit the entire office on a limited budget.)
