Master of Arts in Teaching Math

Master of Arts in Teaching Math

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree program in Math (9th -12th Grade) is designed to provide those with baccalaureate degrees outside the field of education with the professional preparation needed for classroom teaching. This program has been approved for certification in South Carolina. With this degree we are trying to produce thinking teachers knowledgeable in their subject matter area. We want teachers to be able to prepare fresh, original lessons and not be bound to structured teacher's manuals. Your training in this program will equip you to evaluate academic curricula as well as to formulate a strong Christian philosophy of education.

Key Courses

Psychology of Education You will survey psychological research and practices in education with special attention to teaching, development of Christian school programs, learning theory, and growth and behavior.

Directed Teaching Here you will have a chance to "try your wings" by teaching under the supervision of an experienced teacher. You will begin gradually and work into handling a teacher's normal load.

Abstract Algebra You will learn set theory, topics from number theory, the theory of algebraic structures including mappings, group theory, rings, integral domains, and fields.

Probability and Statistics I This class covers elementary combinatorial analysis, independence and dependence, distribution functions, moment-generating functions, random variables, central limit theorem, elementary point and interval estimation, and hypothesis testing.

Ring Theory This elective class is a study of various types of rings with the aim of providing the secondary school mathematics teacher with ability to give students examples of the concepts commonly taught in high school.

Career Opportunities

You could have as many as three good teaching opportunities to choose from as you look for a place to teach. (We receive over three times as many requests for teachers as we have teachers to fill those requests.) And, in the future, this ratio is going to increase as we, as a nation, face a national teacher shortage. You will be qualified to help meet this need and train young people both in the states and abroad.
