This program has been approved for certification in South Carolina. With this degree we are trying to produce thinking teachers. Key Courses
Characteristics of Emotional-Behavior Disorders, Learning Disabilities, or Mental Retardation Each student in the graduate Special Education program is required to have six semester hours of instruction in the characteristics of exceptional children corresponding with the areas of their primary interest.
Behavior Management teaches you concepts and strategies of behavior management as it relates to special education and children with disabilities. Both behavioral and affective approaches are presented with discussions and readings focusing on basic behavioral principles, numerous behavior enhancement and reduction interventions, and the use of rewards and punishment. Some instruction in management of the classroom environment is also provided.
Psychology of Education is a survey of psychological research and practice in education with special attention to teaching, development of Christian school programs, learning theory, and growth and behavior.
Directed Teaching Here you will have a chance to "try your wings" by teaching under the supervision of an experienced teacher. You will begin gradually and work into handling a teacher's normal load.
Career Opportunities
You could have as many as three good teaching opportunities to choose from as you look for a place to teach. We receive over three times as many requests for teachers as we have teachers to fill those requests. And, in the future, this ratio is going to increase as we, as a nation, face a national teacher shortage. You will be qualified to help meet this need and train young people both in the states and abroad.
