Spanish Education

Spanish Education

This program will equip you to teach Spanish on the elementary, junior high, or high school level. It offers instruction in vocabulary, grammar, selected literature, and culture of the target language and nations; and it develops competence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing the foreign language. It includes all the education courses and experiences necessary to obtain teaching certification. While all of your course requirements can be completed in residence, we strongly recommend that our majors and minors take advantage of our summer studies abroad program in either South America or Spain.

Key Courses

Instructional Technology This class will give you the opportunity to find out the latest in computer and educational technology. It will help you in the selection of computer hardware and educational software for your classroom. Through hands-on lab training, you will learn how to integrate educational technology into the normal classroom setting.

Teaching Foreign Language (K-12) In this class you will learn the structure of the language, how to prepare foreign language lesson plans, and techniques for teaching a foreign language. You will also learn about foreign language instruction for the elementary school child, how to set up a language lab, and how to start a language club in your school. In addition, you will gain practical experience learning the materials, methods, procedures, and related topics for teaching a foreign language on the school level of your choice.

Directed Teaching Here you will have a chance to "try your wings" by teaching under the supervision of an experienced teacher. You will begin gradually and work into handling a teacher's normal load.

Career Opportunities

Some of the career opportunities available to our foreign language education graduates include the following:

  • Teaching (elementary school, secondary school, language school)
  • Missions
  • Interpretation (oral) and Translation (written)
  • Manufacturer's Representative (either at home or abroad)
  • International: Airlines, Banking, Industry, Business, Journalism

We currently have five times as many requests for foreign language teachers as we have graduates to fill the positions. We anticipate that the number of opportunities for graduates in this field will be increasing in the future as more schools add modern language departments. There is a wide open door of opportunity for you if you feel that the Lord is leading you in this direction.
