Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies

The Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Studies is designed for those who wish to teach on the college or Bible institute level and who wish to pursue the Doctor of Philosophy degree, as well as for those who intend to enter a lifelong ministry as a youth pastor or an assistant to a senior pastor. The degree in Pastoral Studies is also an excellent preparatory program for those wishing to pursue the Master of Divinity degree, the standard seminary degree for those preparing for the pastoral ministry. This degree can be completed during the regular school term or in three summers. This degree may also be earned on Mondays only through modular courses during five consecutive semesters.

Key Courses

Pastoral Theology In this course you will study the qualifications of the pastor and the responsibilities of pastoral ministry, including various facets of church leadership, organizational polity, pastoral care, and church discipline.

Expository Sermon Preparation This course presents a step-by-step approach to the development of expository sermons, with examples drawn from varied forms of biblical literature in both the Old and New Testaments. Extensive preparation of expository sermons is a significant element of this class.

Systematic Theology In this course you will study the nature, necessity, methods, and materials of theology as well as the application of principles of systematic theology to the scriptural revelation about God, man, sin, Christ, salvation, the Church, and the end times, following a biblical dispensational hermeneutic.

Career Opportunities

The Office of Extension Ministries assists qualified BJU alumni and current students nearing graduation with church ministry opportunities. Many churches contact this office in search of prospective candidates for the positions of pastor, assistant pastor, youth pastor, and music director. A personal profile may be obtained from the office, and related issues may be discussed with the Director of Ministerial Training. Pastors, camp directors, mission board directors, and other recruiters often visit the campus to find personnel for their ministries.
