Emery Bopp Passes Away
BJU Division of Art chairman emeritus, Emory Bopp, died early morning on Thursday,
February 1. He was 82 years old. Mr. Bopp came to Bob Jones University in 1951. He
became chairman of the Division of Art in 1953 and continued in that position for 41 years
until 1994. He remained faithfully teaching until his official retirement in 2001.
Mr. Bopp studied history of art at New York University and earned a certificate from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Yale University School of Art. While there he was a student of Joseph Albers, Alvin Eisenmann, Alvin Lustig and William de Kooning. In 1967 he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Rochester Institute of Technology.
It is with these credentials that he laid the solid foundation of an art program that continues to guide students today in their artistic development. He was an inspiration of faithfulness to those who labored with him. “His Lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” (Matthew 25:21). His former students will remember his talent but most of all his humble, kind and patient instruction in the classroom.
