Junior Graphic Design Major Wins Major Design Award
The recently privatized Indiana Toll Road wanted to change its identity from a state logo to
a new and unique brand. So the ITR Concession Company (which operates the Indiana Toll Road)
went to South Bend-based Fish Marketing to sponsor a nationwide competition open to any college
student from Indiana attending an accredited college or university.
By the time graphic design major Andrea Herbster heard about the competition, she had about 48 hours to develop a concept and design her entries. One of several ideas Andrea submitted won the contest and was selected for use by the Indiana Toll Road. The award consisted of $5,000 to be used for educational expenses.
Andrea’s winning design symbolizes the hash marks in the middle of a road, which also forms a lower case “i.” A Toll Road spokesman said that they chose Andrea’s design because of the identifiable mark and the accompanying typography.
