Graduate Assistant: Will Meadows

Will MeadowsI’ve been working at Creative Services since I graduated in May 2004. The Lord worked it out so that after graduation I was hired on as advertising manager. My primary responsibilities were to work as a designer. My secondary responsibilities were to manage the advertising activities for the University.

For the first year I primarily did design work for things like M&G printed pieces, artist series signage and programs, BJU handbooks, and admissions marketing pieces. In the advertising realm I managed all of our long-term ad contracts (FrontLine magazine, Today’s Christian Preacher, and a variety of Christian/homeschool literature). I also met regularly with local publishing representatives. My main job was to make our ads press-ready and then to send them to the magazines when they were due.

I have helped to train the incoming designers and delegate new design jobs as they come in. Some of my larger responsibilities include designing the BJU Review and TCTeen magazines. I lay out the ACCORD (monthly faculty/staff newsletter) and am responsible for all M&G graphics. The largest of the M&G jobs includes an annual exhibition. That usually takes about six months to plan and produce and then hangs in the exhibition room at the M&G for a year (which means after it's been hanging for six months, I start working on the next one).

Back in the advertising realm, I still have the same responsibilities; however, our whole advertising scheme has been enlarged and now includes advertising on several websites, so I have to update that information regularly.

In addition to the above, I’m involved in marketing, creating brochures, ID badges, signage, posters, and T-shirt design. The experience that I am gaining right now is invaluable. Most of the designers that I graduated with two years ago are still working as entry-level designers. While they are flowing copy into a manual, I’m creating museum exhibitions and four-color magazines. The opportunities here are amazing, and I know they will pay off big in the long run.
