2009 Distinguished Servant Award

Iris Jackson

Iris Jackson

Iris Jackson received a bachelor of arts in Christian education from Bob Jones College in 1946. Upon graduation she intended to teach Bible in the public school but was offered a position in BJC’s business office by Dr. Bob Sr.’s secretary. Uncertain about what to do, she sought the advice of Dr. Monroe Parker, director of religious activities, who believed he knew where the Lord wanted her. Dr. Parker had her name on a list to consider for dormitory supervisor without knowing the College had already offered her another position. Dr. Parker’s disclosure convinced our recipient the Lord wanted her to serve Him at her alma mater. Her firm knowledge that she was in the center of God’s will kept her from ever doubting that decision over the 51 years she worked for Bob Jones University.

In addition to serving in the Business Office, she served at the switchboard for six years and as assistant office manager for two years before assuming the role of office manager in 1954, a position which she held until 1965. She continued working as the assistant office manager until her retirement in 1997, after which she returned frequently as a volunteer.

Her ministry spanned three generations of Joneses. During that time she made it her personal mission to ensure that the University and administration looked good through her careful attention to details. She has rarely forgotten any student, staff or faculty member who was here during her tenure. Her sharp mind and interest in the school’s past have truly made her the chief guardian of BJU’s institutional memory.

For over a half century of faithful service, loyalty to BJU, and dedication to her Lord and Savior, the Alumni Association Executive Committee is extremely pleased to award this year’s Distinguished Servant Award to Mrs. Iris (Jump) Jackson.
