2014 Outstanding Service Citation

Steven Lee

Steven LeeThousands around the world have had an opportunity to hear the messages preached here at Bob Jones University because of the graduate we honor today. Born in Seoul, South Korea, our recipient emigrated with his family to Canada when he was two years old. He was exposed to his future alma mater under the ministry of Dr. Frank McClelland, pastor of the Toronto Free Presbyterian Church. He came to Greenville to attend BJU and graduated with honors in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.

Soon after graduation, our recipient showed himself to be both programmer and artist as he created an unabridged audio dramatization of The Pilgrim's Progress—which is being sold to this day by Answers in Genesis. He put this combination of programming ability and artistic insight into further practice when he was commissioned to create the multimedia kiosks in the Bob Jones Jr. Memorial Seminary building.

This graduate's greatest influence to date started in his home as he began providing for local churches audio recordings of sermons over the Internet. SermonAudio.com, the company he founded and where he currently serves as president, has the largest library of free online sermons from theologically conservative churches and ministries worldwide (with over 750,000 sermons, 17,000 different speakers, and over 145 million sermons downloaded since its founding in 2000). There are listeners in every corner of the globe, and thousands of churches now broadcast from every state in the U.S. and over 40 other countries.

Our recipient's heart for ministries is also seen in his involvement in his local church, Faith Free Presbyterian Church here in Greenville (where he serves as a deacon) and in his work on the board of the New York Gospel Mission based in New York City. He has also helped to print and distribute over 700,000 Gospel of John booklets to major cities across America.

Married to Jamie for over 12 years, our recipient enjoys helping with homeschooling his five children. Their youngest son was born with a complex congenital heart defect and has undergone two of three open-heart surgeries. This experience motivated them to adopt a "heart baby" from China just this past year. She, too, has undergone two open-heart surgeries—giving her an opportunity at life she would not have known otherwise.

For his love for the Lord, love of family, and his burden for the next generation that fuels his passion to do what he can with the gifts God has given him—whether by his testimony or by his work—in the exaltation and spreading forth of the Gospel of Christ to a needy world, I am honored on behalf of the Alumni Association Executive Committee to present this Alumni Outstanding Service Citation to Steven Lee.
