Missions Emphasis Week
Every year during Bob Jones University’s Missions Emphasis Week, mission boards and missionaries serving around the world present their ministries to the university family.
Mission Prayer Band
Mission Prayer Band featured visiting missionaries at each of its meetings. Mr. Tim Aynes from Student Global Impact spoke on a student’s place in missions; Dr. Jack Mitchell from Grace Dental and Medical Missions talked about using medicine in mission work and Mr. Devon Dosson of Baptist Pioneer Mission discussed pioneer mission work opportunities. Dr. Bill Jones of New York Gospel Ministries concluded MPB’s week of special meetings by speaking about missions in an urban context.
On Saturday evening, Mission Prayer Band ended the week with a presentation of the video “Dispatches from the Front” which depicts ministry in some of the most difficult places on the planet.
Chapel
Dr. Martin Herron, pastor of Harvest Baptist Church in Guam, preached in Monday’s chapel about sowing seeds of the Gospel. On Tuesday, he spoke about the passion to pursue missions and multitude of outreach opportunities in the world today. Dr. Mark Batory, executive director of the Gospel Fellowship Association, preached in chapel on Wednesday and Thursday about working in missions and offering one’s life to God for a life of service. Great Commission Responsibility
“Every Christian has Great Commission responsibilities,” said Mr. Mark Vowels, director of missions at BJU. “As a liberal arts university, BJU prepares students for all types of vocational pursuits. Missions Emphasis Week is intended to help each student recognize where he or she fits into Christ's Great Commission purpose, and to develop an enthusiastic response to that calling.”
Missions Emphasis Week further emphasizes this year’s theme of “Living in Light of the Gospel.” Spreading the Gospel is a constant drive and ultimate goal for the university.
Student Experience
Students appreciate the week set aside to focus on missions work around the world.
Jonathan Bishop – Class of ‘10
I love Missions Emphasis week because it is a powerful focus on what our lives are all about. We are in this earth to make followers of Christ throughout the world. I am eager to hear the chapel speakers and the Mission Prayer Band speakers as well as meet the missions representatives. God has used people like this to impact my life in a powerful way and call me to missions.
Jeremy Dion – Class of ‘10
Each year during Missions Emphasis Week I can't help but have my excitement for missions renewed when I spend time with various representatives learning about their burdens for the mission fields of the world and sharing my own!
Missions Emphasis Week has always provided an exciting and unique opportunity for me to mingle among choice servants of God directly involved in the worldwide advancement of Christ’s kingdom.
Jonathan Biddle – Class of ‘11
Missions Emphasis Week really helps me refocus on what matters. Although it comes at a busy time when the temptation is to be self-centered, the focus on God’s work among the nations reminds me that life is about something much, much bigger–the glory of Jesus.
