Music Camp (Senior)
Week 1: July 13-18—Band, Piano, Handbells
Week 2: July 20-25—String Orchestra, Mixed Chorus, Piano, Organ, Harp
Cost: $350
Grades 9-12 (as of September 2008) and 2008 high school graduates
Senior Music Camp offers the opportunity to strengthen your musical skills and knowledge under the tutelage of BJU’s music faculty, professionals who are nationally recognized for their musical excellence.
Elective music classes and performances in recitals, masterclasses, and the final concert will serve to balance the total program.
Band and Strings
Band requirements: minimum of two years’ experience on instrument
String requirements: must read music well, be working on literature comparable to the
end of Suzuki Vol. 4, and play competently in 3rd and 4th positions
Activities
- Audition upon arrival for chair placement
- Participate and perform in large groups
- Receive individualized coaching in small ensembles and workshops
- Participate in an optional solo contest (band campers)
Handbells
Campers need not have specific ringing experience but must be able to read standard music notation.
Activities
- Explore different positions in a full choir and in small ensembles, using more than six octaves of handbells and five and a half octaves of chimes
- Study a variety of musical styles and techniques, such as 4-in-hand, weaving, mallets, ringing multiple bass bells, belltrees and solo ringing
Vocalists
- Benefit from large group experience in the mixed chorus
- Receive individual attention in master classes and vocal ensembles
- Participate in an optional voice contest
Piano and Organ
Piano requirements: minimum of two years’ experience
Organ requirements: Campers without previous
organ training should be able to play Bach Two-part Inventions as well as sonatas
by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert or Beethoven on the piano.
Activities
- Take private lessons, attend masterclasses and perform in recitals
- Receive coaching in hymn playing and ensemble performance
Harp
Requirements: Campers must bring their own harps and be able to
sight-read fluently, perform pieces comparable to Harp Olympics
Level 2 or Sylvia Woods publications Level B or above, have working knowledge
of pedals and levers, and be familiar with three-octave scales with both hands.
Activities
- Take private lessons
- Participate in a full schedule of ensembles and masterclasses
Instruments and Music
A limited number of certain instruments are available for rental for $10 for the week. All campers should bring both classical and sacred music they are currently working on for use in auditions, study in lessons, and performance in recitals and contests.
Private Lessons
All piano, organ and harp campers will receive a private lesson at no extra charge. Other campers may take one half-hour private lesson in voice or one of the standard band or orchestral instruments for an extra charge of $15. Please indicate on the reservation form if you wish to take a private lesson (one per camper per week).
