High School Festival
The High School
Festival challenges Christian teenagers, recognizes their achievements, and
also helps develop their talents through activities directed by the university faculty.
Highlights
- BJU’s music, speech, and art faculty will present clinics or workshops in some performance fields.
- University instrumental ensembles and vocal choirs will have open rehearsals.
- Special music workshops will be offered on Thursday for visiting sponsors, teachers, and students.
- Visit University classes in your area of interest.
Special events include:
- Exhibition of winning artwork
- Presentation of Festival awards
- Three recitals/concerts featuring performances by all solo and ensemble winners, in addition to the Festival Mixed Chorus, Ladies Chorus, Concert Band, Wind Band, and String Orchestra.
Stipulations
Please note school contest limitations.
- Participants may enter a maximum of three individual/solo contests. Please note: Contestants may not compete against themselves in any group competition; therefore, they may not be a member of more than one group within any particular contest area (e.g., competing in two different small vocal ensembles).
- Entry in up to three art categories will count as only one Festival contest.
- A contestant may win first place in any individual/solo contest only once, although he may enter that same contest another year in order to receive the judges’ critiques. Groups may win first place more than once.
- Any student who does not fulfill all of the contest requirements will forfeit his right to win but will receive judges’ written critiques.
- Contestants are strongly encouraged to participate in one of the following:
- Bands—at least 3 years’ experience required (ninth and tenth graders will be eligible for the Concert Band, and eleventh and twelfth graders for the Wind Band).
- String Orchestra (see reservation form for eligibility criteria)—enrollment is limited and early registration is encouraged.
- Festival Mixed Chorus & Ladies Chorus—limited to students already participating in some area of the piano, organ, handbell, or vocal competition (solo, ensemble, or choir).
- Young ladies in the ninth through twelfth grades are eligible for the Ladies Chorus. Each school or homeschool group may select up to twenty-eight students with a maximum of fourteen for each voice part (i.e., fourteen sopranos and fourteen altos).
- Eleventh- and twelfth-grade young ladies and ninth- through twelfth-grade young men are eligible for the Mixed Chorus. Each school or homeschool group may select up to thirty-six students divided as follows for each voice part: six sopranos, six altos, twelve tenors, and twelve basses.
