Music Camp offers the opportunity to strengthen your musical skills and knowledge under the tutelage of BJU’s music faculty, professionals who are nationally recognized for their musical excellence.
Elective music classes and performances in recitals, masterclasses, and the final concert will serve to balance the total program.
Band requirements: must read music well and have a minimum of at least 2 years’ experience on instrument
String requirements: must read music well, be working on literature comparable to the end of Suzuki Vol. 4, and play competently in 3rd and 4th positions
Activities
- Audition upon arrival for chair placement
- Two large group rehearsals daily
- Receive daily individualized coaching in small ensembles, sectionals, and workshops
A limited number of certain instruments are available for rental for $10 (no fee for use of percussion instruments). Please email ahead for availability.
Campers may take one half-hour private lesson for an extra charge of $15. Please indicate on the reservation form if you wish to take a private lesson.
Individual ringers, partial groups, and full choirs are welcome. Campers need not have specific ringing experience but must be able to read standard music notation. No music to purchase or prepare in advance. No equipment necessary to bring with you.
Activities
- Explore different positions in a full choir and in small ensembles, using more than six octaves of handbells and five and a half octaves of chimes
- Study a variety of musical styles and techniques, such as 4-in-hand, weaving, mallets, ringing multiple bass bells, bell trees and solo ringing
- Benefit from large-group experience in ladies and mixed ensembles
- Receive daily individual attention in private lessons, masterclasses and small ensembles
- Explore drama in music activities daily

Piano requirements: minimum of two years’ experience
Organ requirements: Campers without previous organ training should be able to play Bach Two-part Inventions as well as sonatas by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert or Beethoven on the piano.
Activities
- Take private and group lessons
- Attend masterclasses and perform in recitals
- Receive coaching in hymn playing and ensemble performance
Requirements: Campers must be able to sight-read fluently, perform pieces comparable to Harp Olympics Level 2 or Sylvia Woods publications Level B or above, have working knowledge of pedals and levers, and be familiar with three-octave scales with both hands.

Auditions
Auditions for choir, piano, organ and harp campers and chair placement in the string orchestra and band will be held on Sunday afternoon immediately following check-in. Campers will be asked to sight-read and play a portion of a prepared solo or etude. Handbell campers will not have any auditions.
Music
All campers should bring both classical and sacred music they are currently working on for use in auditions, study in lessons, and performance in recitals and contests.
Recitals/Concerts
Final recitals for piano, strings, harp, voice and handbells will be held on Friday at 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. The final concert featuring the large performing groups begins at 2 p.m. on Friday in Stratton Hall. All are open to the public and free of charge. Camp is officially over after the concert (approximately 3:30 p.m.).
