Fundamentalism File
Introduction to the File
The Fundamentalism File, which has been in existence since 1978, collects non-book items (mostly periodical articles) on subjects of religious interest to Christians. Most of the material comes from religious periodicals subscribed to by the J.S. Mack Library at Bob Jones University. Information on individuals and organizations of religious significance is probably the most important aspect of the collection, but the File also collects information on ethical issues (e.g., homosexuality, capital punishment, abortion), social trends/issues (e.g., divorce, immorality and violence on television, poverty), church/state affairs (e.g., tax exemption for religious organizations, separation of church and state, public schools and religion), and practical problems with religious significance (e.g., preaching, church planting, developing a missions program).
The File has 100,000 articles listed under 5,000 subject headings. Information from the Fundamentalism File is not an official statement of Bob Jones University on any issue. Use of a given periodical by the Fundamentalism File is not an endorsement of that source.
Fundamentalism File Manuscript Collections
The Fundamentalism File also houses manuscript collections pertinent to the history of Fundamentalism and Fundamentalist approaches to religious and social issues. Currently, the center has three such collections: the papers of G. Archer Weniger (1915-82), California Fundamentalist leader who published The Blu-Print and was deeply involved in the Conservative Baptist Association and later the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship; the papers of W. O. H. Garman (1899-1983), pastor and advocate on behalf of Fundamentalists in the military chaplaincy through the Associated Gospel Churches; and the papers of Gilbert Stenholm (1915-89), long-time administrator at Bob Jones University.

Using the Fundamentalism File
The Fundamentalism File is located on the second floor of the J.S. Mack Library. The File is open to students, faculty, and staff of BJU as well as visitors. No special permission is required for non-BJU patrons to use the File. File workers retrieve the information for the patrons. While local patrons should access the File in person, out-of-town patrons can benefit from the File's resources by having information sent through the mail. See below for details.
Guidelines for Out-Of-Town Information Requests
In order that we may provide the best service possible, the following guidelines should be observed:
-
Be as specific as possible. For example, patrons requesting information on abortion should indicate whether a pro or con viewpoint is desired (or both), whether the articles should present the biblical data on abortion, and whether a specific aspect of abortion is needed (e.g. fetal pain, media bias, etc.).
-
Include name and phone number with all requests. Before processing most requests, we place a phone call to verify the request and obtain a mailing address.
-
Indicate the maximum cost for the request. We will keep the combined photocopying, handling, and postal charges under this amount. (As a general rule of thumb, $10 will normally cover approximately 50-60 pages of information.)
- Patrons will receive an invoice for the information supplied, payable
(in U.S. funds) upon receipt of the information.
Charges for Out-Of-Town Requests
- 10 cents per copied page
- $1 handling fee per 50 pages or part thereof
- USPS, UPS, or fax charges (Fax charges are normally about $1.00 per
page.)
