Apples of Gold — Finding
In Original Oratory, you want to be controversial. Make sure you remember these tips:
- Think fresh. Don't just give us what we want to hear. Try something new. Novelty often impresses us.
- Think of your audience. What do they need? What is important to them? What do they already know? Don't merely stroke our egos. Move us. Change us. You wouldn't want to make your thesis, "You should listen to Original Oratory speeches," because we are already doing that!
- Pick a current event, newsworthy topic, or a topic that will challenge the audience to consider something they have not before or that will challenge the audience to look at a common issue in a new way.
- Avoid hackneyed topics. Abortion, capital punishment, etc., are topics on which most of us probably already agree with you (think about your audience), and it's very difficult to tell us something new about them.
You might try these places for topic ideas.
