Helpful Tips
English Classes
- Read carefully the page that immediately precedes the vocabulary, prefix, root, suffix, barbarism/colloquialism, and spelling sections in the appendix of your Companion to College English (CCE) book. These pages give good study tips and help you understand the most effective means of approaching each of the sections.
- Give themselves enough time to complete your work (exercises, papers, etc.) so that you’ll be able to get help if you need it before the assignments are due.
- Come to class (whether lecture or tutorial) fully prepared, having completed all exercises and writing assignments for that day and having reviewed your CCE material fully so that you may take advantage of the opportunities for questions and discussion.
- See your tutorial teacher for help as needed. Many students could be more successful in their courses if they utilized the wealth of help that their teachers are willing to provide them.
History of Civilization
- Don’t take shortcuts in the preparation, reading, or study process.
- Read each assignment thoroughly and completely. Many students skim read, looking only for important terms or main facts. However, this practice often does not supply a full understanding of how the terms/facts relate to the topic. Read for understanding!
- Listen attentively and actively take notes in lecture class.
- Come prepared for discussion classes having read all the assignments and with specific questions for your discussion teacher.
- Constantly review the material for each unit; don’t wait until the night before a test to study. There is usually too much material to master in one study session. Review aids learning!
- Seek help early and often from your discussion teacher if you realize a deficiency in your study habits or course performance.
