Questions to Ask Your Teacher
Note Taking
- Weak – Would you talk slower so that I can have time to write everything down in my notes?
- OK – Could you please summarize what is most important about that point?
- Best – After expressing what you understand the teacher has stated, ask: Is that what you mean? Or before or after class ask: I’ve created a Review Sheet that summarizes the key points and what those terms mean, could you check to see if I am accurate?
TIP – Share with the teacher what you understand; then ask for help to confirm it.
Reading Assignments
- Weak – Are we going to be quizzed or tested over this reading assignment?
- OK – What would be the best way for me to get what is needed from this reading assignment?
- Best – Could you check my outline/notes to see if I’ve captured the main ideas?
TIP – Share with the teacher what you understand; then ask for help to confirm it.
Quizzes and Tests
- Weak – What’s going to be on the quiz or test?
- OK – What types of questions will be asked?
- Best – I’ve created a Review Sheet of the most important facts. Could you check over my information and let me know if I’ve covered the bases and am reviewing the right information?
TIP – If a Study Guide has been provided, be sure to be prepared for everything listed.
Improving My Grades
- Weak – I just cannot seem to make passing/desired grades. Should I withdraw from your course?
- OK – Any advice on how I can improve my grade in your course?
- Best – What’s the best way to prepare for the upcoming test?
TIP – Use your syllabus to record the grades you are earning on various assignments, projects, quizzes, and tests. Have your notes and Review Sheet available for the teacher to check for accuracy when you ask for help.
