James A. Berg, MA, DD
Dean of Students, Chief Student Life Officer
Dr. Jim Berg serves as the dean of students at Bob Jones University, a position he has held since 1981.
Education & Work Experience
The South Dakota native graduated from Bob Jones University in 1974 with a bachelor of arts degree in Bible. He received a graduate assistantship from his alma mater, completed the master of arts degree in theology in 1976, and received an honorary doctor of divinity from Tabernacle Baptist Theological Seminary in Norfolk, Va., in 1999.
He served as an administrative assistant at Bob Jones University from 1976 until the fall of 1981 when he was appointed to his present position.
Publications
Dr. Berg has authored a handbook for new Christians titled Basics for Believers; a primer, When Trouble Comes, for those facing trials; a manual on helping others make biblical change, Changed Into His Image; its sequel, Created for His Glory; and a newly released book on the development of Christian character, Essential Virtues—all published by BJU Press. He is also the instructor featured in the BJU Video Counseling Series, which provides 72 hours of instruction for pastors and laymen on how to help their people with the problems of living, and the personal counseling program, Quieting a Noisy Soul.
Family
In addition to their responsibilities at BJU, he and his wife, the former Pat Zeller, a member of the BJU faculty, speak at couples conferences and retreats in churches and camps across America. The Bergs have three married daughters and a growing family of grandchildren.
