This course provides the student with knowledge of basic assessment findings of patients across the lifespan, identifying normal and abnormal findings. Supervised lab experiences provide opportunity to practice skills in patient interviews, taking health histories, and physical assessment techniques (2 credits lecture, 1 credit lab). This course introduces foundational concepts of the nursing profession, delivery of safe, quality care, and basic clinical skills. This course introduces basic principles of pharmacology and their application to key body systems. Students acquire knowledge regarding pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of major drug classes with an emphasis on prototype drugs in each category with their therapeutic use, adverse effects, precautions, and interactions. Nursing process and clinical judgment guide application of these concepts to determine appropriate nursing actions related to medications.

This course discusses a broad understanding of leadership and management roles with application to the professional nurse role. Concepts of delegation, collaboration, advocacy, change agency, and conflict management are emphasized.
