Pho 100: Photography I 3 credits

An introduction to professional photography. Foundational techniques of camera operation and file management will be taught with an emphasis on visual storytelling and creativity. Regular photography assignments and critiques will be given. Some sections are not available to students outside of the School of Fine Arts and Communication.

Pho 200: Photography II 3 credits

Continuation of foundational professional photography techniques expanding to retouching and advanced lighting principles. Students explore elevated visual language and strategic compositional design. Instruction in printing and presenting a photography portfolio.

Prerequisite: Pho 100.

Pho 300: Photojournalism 3 credits

Overview of the field of photojournalism, with an emphasis on photographing events and creating documentary photo essays. Students participate in weekly shooting assignments and critique.

Pho 301: The Art of Photography 3 credits

Pho 310: Advanced Photographic Lighting 3 credits

A study of the characteristics and qualities of photographic light, both natural and artificial, and how they can be manipulated and controlled to communicate an artistic visionu8239 ?and produce professional commercial photographs.u8239 ?Student will receive instruction and complete assignments in a working professional photo studio.

Pho 401: Wedding Photography 3 credits

A practicum-style course in wedding photography that emphasizes professional practices. Students learn the business of wedding photography and sharpen technical shooting and retouching skills through a guided mentorship.

Prerequisite: Pho 310.

Pho 402: Portrait Photography 3 credits

An exploration into the art of modern photographic portraiture and professional retouching techniques. Emphasis on professional practices both in the studio and on location. Students will produce professional prints and participate in weekly group critique sessions.

Pho 404: Commercial Tabletop Photography 3 credits

A studio concentration on lighting techniques and compositional guidelines for commercial photography, including techniques for small product photography and retouching. Includes individual and group photographic assignments.

Prerequisite: Pho 310.

Pho 415: Photography Internship 3 credits

With the approval of program faculty, photography students work within professional photography businesses. Students are mentored through work experiences by their employer. This may involve shooting, assisting, or other related industry work. Students complete a weekly reflection journal and produce a final paper documenting and reflecting on the industry learning experience.

Pho 420: Professional Portfolio 3 credits

Seniors prepare content for their career in the professional photography world. Their best photography will be produced and presented in a digital and physical portfolio. Attention will be given to professional marketing materials to promote their skill sets and services. Students will network with professional organizations in their specific photographic area of emphasis.

Prerequisite: Pho 415.
