Dr. James Brammer comes to Bob Jones University after more than 20 years in the private practice of law. He earned his undergraduate degree in accounting from Walsh College in Troy and then received his Juris Doctor from the University of Notre Dame in 1992. Dr. Brammer is admitted to practice law in multiple jurisdictions and in the United States Tax Court. He has litigated civil matters in various state and federal courts and has presented appellate briefs to state and federal courts of appeal, including the Supreme Court of the United States. He draws upon his broad base of education and experience and shares it with students in class. When discussing legal concepts that will affect them as they minister in the business world, he provides examples based, in part, on situations encountered both in the courtroom and in representing business owners in the acquisition, operation, and sales or other dissolutions of those businesses. In discussions regarding taxation issues, his illustrative material comes from experience obtained in representing clients in property tax, estate tax, and income tax matters.
The content of both the Legal Environment and Taxation courses prepare students for components of the CPA exam. Those students who do not take the CPA exam are nonetheless prepared to encounter legal issues which frequently arise in the positions they will ultimately hold after graduation. Whatever the subject, students will hear Dr. Brammer encourage them to think of their work not merely as a job, but as their ministry of business.
