David Schwingle

David R. Schwingle is a voice coach (RRT), playwright, an assistant professor, and an actor living, teaching, and performing “acts of theatre” in South Carolina. David has a passion for creating new stories and sharing them with an audience, and he loves helping others do the same.

In October, 2014, David completed his MFA in Playwriting as a member of the Playwright's Lab at Hollins University, where he had regular instruction from Todd Ristau, Bonnie Metzgar, Jeff Goode, Kate Bredeson, Megan Gogerty, and John Bergman (of Geese Theatre).

His one-act play, My Brother’s Keeper, was published in 2005. In May, 2010, David’s monologue, “Eleanor,” was chosen to be part of Leading Ladies, a show of original monologues produced at New York City’s Theater Lab (July, 2010). In 2011 and 2012, David worked with a small ensemble of actors to organically create a play from group improvisation and writing exercises. The result, A Midnight Vesper Dream, premiered at a local Greenville college in 2012. In late 2012, David’s full-length play, Alas (and other wedding songs), received a University production in Greenville, South Carolina. In July, 2013, David’s one-act play A Roof of Slate received a staged reading at Mill Mountain Theatre’s Centerpieces staged reading series. Todd Ristau, Head of Hollins University’s MFA Playwriting program, directed the production. Also in July, David’s full-length play, Gramercy, was selected to be a part of Hollins University Playwright’s Lab’s New Works festival at Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, VA. As a part of the staged reading, David received feedback from leaders in the field. Gramercy went on to be independently produced in Greenville, South Carolina (September 5-8, 2013).

In July, 2013, David was commissioned to write a monologue for The Breakaway Project’s “Connecting Creativity” Dublin production, a show featuring a number of monologues by Irish and American Playwrights. The monologue was performed by Evelyn Shaw in August in Dublin, Ireland. The show was directed by Helena Byrne and Karen Davidson Perrins. Upon the successful run of the Dublin theatre project, David was asked to write a second monologue for a November show. The second monologue featured the actress Diana O’Connor and was performed in Dublin before a live audience, as well as being live-streamed to a second audience in New York City. The show was directed by Helena Byrne and Karen Davidson Perrins.

On July 12, 2014, David's 10-minute play, Winning with Shakespeare!, was written and produced as a part of Mill Mountain Theatre's (Roanoke, VA) 24-Hour, 10-minute "Overnight Sensations" play festival.

In 2015, David's short play, Separate, was produced at Tesseract Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri (April 17-25).

In 2016, David’s 10-minute play, The Match, was produced by Showtimers as a part of the celebration of the Roanoke Star.

In April, 2017, David's 10-minute play Winning with Shakespeare! won the annual new works festival at the Atlantic Stage (Myrtle Beach, SC).

David played Hamlet with Classic Players (Greenville, SC) in April of 2016, a task that led him to begin studying with Patsy Rodenburg at the Michael Howard Studios in NYC. 

David completed a Voice and Acting Teacher’s Certification (RRT) through the Patsy Rodenburg Institute for Voice and Speech housed at the Michael Howard Studios (2017).
