About

Dr. Carruthers has over 30 years of experience in Christian education ranging from the traditional K-12 Christian school to providing leadership as dean of the School of Education at Bob Jones University. Dr. Carruthers, a native Canadian, has held positions as teacher and administrator at two Christian schools, one in Florida and one in North Carolina, before returning to Bob Jones University in 2004 as a faculty member and later as the Director of Clinical Practice in the School of Education. He was appointed dean of the School of Education in 2009. Dr. Carruthers holds an undergraduate degree in biology education and a master’s degree in educational administration from Bob Jones University. His doctorate in school leadership is from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Dr. Carruthers’ passion is to see young people come to BJU and successfully prepare for God’s calling in their life. Each year he has the privilege of working with approximately 100 teacher candidates as they finish their program requirements by completing their student teaching. These young people leave the Division of Teacher Education to become instructional leaders in Christian, public, or international school settings. Besides providing leadership in the teacher preparation programs, Dr. Carruthers has also been active in the development and implementation of three new programs in the School of Education’s Division of Health, Exercise & Sports Science—Exercise Science, Sports Management, and Health and Fitness. Dr. Carruthers also has been active in providing assistance to national and international K-12 Christian schools by coordinating professional development workshops and online graduate programs to help strengthen these ministries.

Dr. Carruthers is active in the higher educational landscape in the state of South Carolina. He is a member of the South Carolina Education Dean’s Alliance as well as participates in other State Department of Education events. Dr. Carruthers has a passion for his personal professional development by attending numerous annual conferences in education and accreditation. Dr. Carruthers and his wife Ann have three daughters and two granddaughters and attend Calvary Baptist Church in Simpsonville, South Carolina.
