In light of Disney’s current social agenda, some Christians have raised appropriate questions about our staging Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. We understand these valid questions and concerns.
Beauty and the Beast is rooted in ancient cultural stories from India, Africa, and Greece. It is considered a classical fairy tale. In the late 1980’s, The Walt Disney Company drew from the story’s origins and developed a musical version that became the animated feature-length film, released in 1991. It opened on Broadway in 1994.
Nothing in the musical promotes unbiblical elements related to Disney’s current social and political agendas. Royalty payments are made to Music Theatre International, not to Disney. No monies from BJU are being paid directly to Disney for performing the musical. However, the licensing agreement requires use of the Disney name.
Our religious beliefs regarding marriage and human sexuality reflect and affirm orthodox, historic Christian doctrine as found in the Bible. We stand in opposition to the social and political agendas represented by The Walt Disney Company.
As a Christian liberal arts university, we are committed to a cultural emphasis that enriches student’s lives through participation in a variety of fine arts events.
